The Visionary - page 15

In March, 55 blind and visually
impaired students from 13 counties in
the West and Central Florida region met
to test their braille skills in an academic
competition unlike any other.
The students took part in The West
Florida Regional Braille Challenge,
which was held here at Lions Eye. The
participants, grades K-12, compete in five
challenging categories requiring them to
transcribe braille and read braille using a
device called a Perkins Brailler. The five
categories test reading comprehension,
braille spelling, chart and graph
reading, proofreading and braille
speed and accuracy.
This year’s theme
“Red, White and
was a huge hit among the
students, teachers and parents alike.
Michelle Yongue
was the Tampa
representative that competed in the
National Braille Challenge in
Hollywood, California in June.
She began her sophomore year at
Palm Harbor University High School’s
International Baccalaureate program
this fall.
Congrats Michelle
on your accomplishments!
